A World of Winds
Northern Giants are the dominant population on Brombrigal. They tend to be nomadic, following the herds of megafauna that populate the subcontinent. Predatory megafauna often pose an existential threat to giant groups, so the role of predator and prey fluctuate. Their societies tend to be low tech, as they’re lacking the history of progress found on the mainland.
Skilled workers of stone, the giants have progressed into the Bronze Age but haven’t found the secret to creating iron.
Organized into chiefdoms, Northern Giant society has tensions between those who follow the traditional way of life, and those who have settled down to farm, ranch, and mine.
Common among all chiefdoms is an inherent distrust of outsiders. The small folk are hated and feared (although they don’t admit the fear) as signs that ancient destruction is going to revisit. The smaller peoples are warned against in the religion of the giants. Northern Giants worship the god Omjir, whose faith is near universal. It is a religion of nature and community. One of the dictates of that religion is that giants don’t leave the continent. This has been followed for hundreds of years. But with the changes happening, some chiefdoms believe it necessary to know what is going on in the larger world, and have created ceremonies to ritually remove the status of giant from the adventurer to be sent overseas. This is taken very seriously for all involved, and the adventurer will fear dying before the ritutal can be reversed, lest s/he be barred from the giant afterlife.
+2 Strength, +2 Wisdom, -2 Dexterity: Giants are big and strong, with a propensity for common sense. They aren’t typically known for for their grace and coordination.
Large: Northern Giants are large and take a –1 penalty to AC, –1 penalty to attack rolls, +1 bonus to Combat Maneuver Bonus and Combat Maneuver Defense, and a –4 penalty to Stealth checks. A Northern Giant’s lifting and carrying limits double those of Medium characters.
Space 10 ft., Reach 5 ft.: Northern Giants have increased size compared to medium creatures, but not reach. They typically stand about 7.5-8 feet tall, but like Earthborn, are very stocky and heavy for their size. Their skin is usually pinkish-white to white in tone, and their hair is light colored, usually white or light blue.
Speed: A Northern Giant’s base speed is 30 feet.
Low-Light Vision: A Northern Giant can see twice as far as a race with normal vision in conditions of dim light.
Rock Throwing: Like most giants, Northern Giants are accomplished rock throwers and gain a +1 racial bonus on attack rolls with thrown rocks. A member of this race can hurl rocks up to two categories smaller than its size. A “rock” is any large, bulky, and relatively regularly shaped object made of any material with a hardness of at least 5. A thrown rock has a range increment of 120 feet. The creature can hurl the rock up to five rage increments. Damage from a thrown rock is 2d6 plus 1-1/2 times the throwing creature’s Strength bonus.
Languages: Northern Giants begin play speaking Giant. As with all characters in this setting, there is no restriction on high intelligence characters learning other languages. Their language is the fantasy version of Norse.
